Pipette Calibration FAQs

What is Pipette Calibration?
Pipette calibration is a process of examining and/or adjusting the pipettes to the true value by comparison to the standard which is set by the manufacturer of that said pipette. The standard in this case is the pipetting range set by the pipette manufacturer to be accurate and precise at low volume and high volume of the pipette. At Pipette.com, we perform metrology based pipette calibration; Metrology based pipette calibration provides a platform where the process is done within strict guidelines of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This ensures that there is a methodology and a standard set for all of the equipment used to calibrate the pipettes.

Why is metrology based pipette calibration important?
Metrology is defined as a science of measurement. Metrology based pipette calibration provides a platform where the process is done within strict guidelines of National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). This ensures that there is a methodology and a standard set for all of the equipment used to calibrate the pipettes. If this standard is not followed there cannot be a statistical guarantee that your results are accurate to true standards. Science is based on reproducible results. When reproducible results cannot be achieved all work is voided. Thus, scientists must strive that all of their work is reproducible. In order to achieve reproducibility scientists must have accurate and precise equipment. Pipettes are the cornerstone of all research, thus they must always be precise and accurate. In order to achieve this scientists must choose pipette service providers that follow strict metrology guidelines. Providers whose equipment is also calibrated and follows strict NIST rules can provide accurate and precise results giving you informative data on the status of your work and your pipette. Without metrology based calibration one cannot statistically say if the pipette is truly within range, it is simply an assumption using an uncertified piece of equipment.

-
Do you repair Pipet-Aids?
Yes, we can repair Pipet-Aids and motorized controllers
-
What is preventative maintenance (PM)?
Preventative Maintenance (PM) is a step in the calibration process that greatly enhances the longevity of your instrument. PM includes full disassembly, interior & exterior cleaning, piston polishing & re-greasing, and new seals/o-rings are replaced as needed. An in-depth PM process helps keep your pipettes operating at peak performance in between your regularly scheduled calibration service dates
-
Do you perform calibration on site?
Yes, we do offer on-site services for calibration. For quotation, pricing, and availability of our on-site calibration services, please request a quote.
-
Accuracy & precision is important when I use my multichannel pipette, what calibration plan would you recommend?
We recommend adding individual channel calibration for your multichannel pipette if you need each channel to be precise and accurate (such as when preforming RT-PCR, ELISA, ECL and Bioassays). This means each channel is individually adjusted, weighed, and calibrated.
-
How much does it cost to fix my broken pipette?
We provide free repair estimates once the broken pipette is in our calibration facility. We only charge you for pipette calibration and replacement parts.
Calibration Services Glossary
-
Pipette Verification
Pipettes undergo a Leakage Test, Functional Test, and Calibration Check are performed with 4x2 weighings.
-
Preventative Maintenance
Each pipette is completely dissembled, cleaned inside & out, pistons are polished & re-greased, and seals &/or o-rings are replaced as needed (as specified by the manufacturer, make, & model) then reassembled. Parts that can wear-out are proactively replaced
-
Online Data Reports Retrieving & Pipette Management Tool
Instantly access a pipette's history, calibration reports and calibration due date on line with our free pipette management tool
-
Pipette Calibration
Every pipette undergoes 4x2 weighings (2 at low volume & 2 at high volume as specified by manufacturer requirements) in an environmentally controlled calibration facility. Extended calibration points & weighings, and individual channel calibration for multichannel pipettes are available upon request.
-
3rd Point Reading (per channel)
Median point (4 weighings) can be added to any calibration order
-
Extended 10×2 Readings (per channel)
Extended Measurements takes 10 measurements at 2 data points (10×2) to provide more statistical data compared to the 4×2 weighings
-
Multi-Channel Readings (per channel)
Each channel of the multichannel pipette is individually adjusted, weighed, and calibrated. Recommended for precise, quantitative work
-
DNA/RNA Decontamination
Removes existing DNA and RNA contamination, such as over aspirated oligonucleotides
-
Complimentary Paper Report
Each Report provides detailed pipette information, mean, standard deviation, and variance of weighings, pipette performance status listed as Pass/ fail, lab conditions during the calibration process, list of parts used in repair, computer-generated barcode linking to online report
-
Calibration Label
Every serviced pipette receives a calibration or verification sticker with a scannable barcode and comprehensive information including the calibration date, next calibration due date, and serial number. Optional information such as user, equipment number and location can also be included on the label
-
Automated Email Reminders for Your Next Calibration Service Date
You can choose to be notified via email 4 weeks to 6 weeks before the pipette calibration due date
-
Printed Copy of GMP/ GLP Calibration Report
Includes all of the features of the complimentary report plus the individual weighings in addition to the mean, a dedicated certificate for each pipette, detailed information on the equipment utilized by Pipette.com, and detailed technician information
-
